Rival German designers were creating groundbreaking designs the British feared would infiltrate their industry as a form of clandestine cultural invasion. Imperialist expansion and industry were the two key causes of the war and Britain felt a pressing need to stay ahead of German innovation. Everybody during the Great War was called upon to join the war effort and Johnston did just that. To answer that, we must look closely at the influences Johnston drew upon to design his typography and the historical context of its creation. Unveiled in 1916, the new look Underground signs were a resounding success, but what exactly were the political dimensions of the typeface? Pick turned to Johnston and the typographer delivered, creating everything from the innovative typeface to the now iconic visual form of the signage, a blue route bar travelling through a red circle. ![]() In 1913, Frank Pick of London Transport decided the London Underground required an integrated design scheme that was both radical and wholly of the time. A strong example of this form of typography is Johnston Sans, or Underground Railway Block-Letter, created by Edward Johnston for the London Underground system during the Great War of 1914-1919. ![]() Typography plays a vital role within the urban landscape, informing the citizens of major cities where they are and need to go, delivering a message through type that often captures the character of the city. Restyling the Underground: Edward Johnston’s Iconic London Letters Tracing their unique forms can provide a picture of the historical and political chapters that collectively tell our story. Typography doesn’t exist in a vacuum, the letters often powerfully evoke specific times and places and can help us come to a clearer understanding of significant cultural changes. The following examples demonstrate how the combination of typographical innovation and historical and political perspectives gave birth to new typefaces delivering important messages that arose from the complex zeitgeist of each given period. Gutenberg’s press later enabled the writings of Martin Luther to be disseminated, changing the religious and political contours of our world forever. From its very inception, the Blackletter Johannes Gutenberg used for his 42-line Bible (c.1455), typography had a seismic historical and political impact. There has always been a profound historical and political dimension to typography. While the use, context and meaning of different typefaces often changes over time, we would be doing a great disservice to the pioneering typographers of the past if we forgot the true origins and aims of the influential forms of type that have become milestones in graphic design’s rich history. Since Git actually just makes commits from the index, all you have to do is copy the desired commit into the index. His decision was questioned by his musicians and also his producer, Fred Rose, who felt that the song did not merit a recording. ![]() In light of the live audience's strong positive reaction, Williams decided to record the song. Horace Logan, the show's producer and programming director for KWKH, reported that the audience "went crazy" the first time Williams performed the song on the show. Hank Williams, who heard both the Miller and Griffin versions, started performing the song on the Louisiana Hayride shortly after joining in August 1948. Though it was his final session for Decca Records, he was eventually inducted by the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, in recognition of songs like " The Last Letter" and "The Lovesick Blues." His recording on Septem was the first " Hillbilly" version (equivalent to today's " Country music") of the latter, and it was his arrangement that Hank Williams later "imitated and immortalized", in December 1948. He added several yodels that emphasised the pain of the singer. Griffin rearranged the song by using the original chorus - "I got a feeling called the blues" as a verse, and turning the verse "I'm in love, I'm in love, with a beautiful gal" into the new chorus. Like Hank Williams, Griffin was a prolific songwriter who was rarely inspired to record compositions other than his own. Įleven years later, Miller's version was covered by country music singer Rex Griffin. On Jaccompanied by the Georgia Crackers ( Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Eddie Lang, and Leo McConville), Miller re-recorded the song, which was released to weak sales. The single was paired with "Big Bad Bill (is Sweet William Now)" and released in November 1925. Accompanied by Walter Rothrock on the piano, Miller cut four sides for the label, including "Lovesick Blues". Among the aspiring artists recorded by Peer was Emmett Miller. On September 1, 1925, OKeh Records sent scout Ralph Peer and a recording crew to Asheville, North Carolina. It was featured in a show at the Boardwalk Club in New York City in June 1922 and recorded by Jack Shea (aka Irving Kaufman) on Vocalion Records later that summer. ![]() Following the recording, Friend and Mills copyrighted the song on April 3, 1922. It was first performed by Anna Chandler in the Tin Pan Alley musical Oh! Ernest and recorded by Elsie Clark on Mawith Okeh Records. in 1922 Irving Mills wrote the lyrics and Cliff Friend composed the music. "Lovesick Blues" was originally titled "I've Got the Love-sick Blues," and published by Jack Mills, Inc. "First sheet music, published in 1922" (PDF). In 2004, Williams' version was added to the National Recording Registry. The most popular, Frank Ifield's 1962 version, topped the UK Singles Chart. Several cover versions of the song have been recorded. It was the biggest hit of Hank Williams' career. After a 42 week run, 16 of those weeks at number 1, the publication named it the top country and western record of the year, while Cashbox named it "Best Hillbilly Record of the Year". ![]() MGM Records released "Lovesick Blues" in February 1949, and it became an overnight success, quickly reaching number one on Billboard's Top Country & Western singles chart and number 24 on the Most Played in Jukeboxes list. Receiving an enthusiastic reception from the audience, Williams decided to record his own version despite initial push back from his producer Fred Rose (a former 1920s Tin Pan Alley songwriter) and his band. The recordings by Griffin and Miller inspired Hank Williams to perform the song during his first appearances on the Louisiana Hayride radio show in 1948. Emmett Miller recorded it in 19, followed by country music singer Rex Griffin in 1939. It first appeared in the 1922 musical "Oh, Ernest", and was recorded that year by Elsie Clark and Jack Shea. * The four weeks that "Last Date" was at #2 on the Top 100, the #1 record for those four weeks was "Are You Lonesome Tonight" by Elvis.Īnd from the 'For What It's Worth' department the last week that Floyd Cramer's "Last Date" was at #2, there were three other versions on the Top 100 at the time, Lawrence Welk's instrumental version at #24, and two vocal versions titled "(My) Last Date (With You)", Skeeter Davis was at #79 and Joni James at #90." Lovesick Blues" is a Tin Pan Alley song, composed by Cliff Friend, with lyrics by Irving Mills.
![]() A matte-blasted three-quarter bridge covers up most of the real estate beneath the display caseback besides the balance wheel, and the signed skeleton rotor bears a clean brushed finish. ![]() While the Calibre 400’s performance is undeniably robust, the movement’s finishing is simple, bordering on industrial. Oris also touts the longevity of the Calibre 400 platform, recommending a service interval of 10 years rather than the more standard five recommended years between services. Power reserve performance is robust as well, with twin mainspring barrels producing a hefty 120 hours of power reserve at a 28,800 bph beat rate. This durability is continued through the automatic rotor, which replaces the complex and often delicate ball bearing system with a mechanically simpler and more robust tongue-and-groove metal slide bearing system which Oris claims produces far less wear. Beyond the excellent accuracy, the Calibre 400 offers magnetic resistance of up to 2,250 gauss, more than 11 times the current ISO standard for anti-magnetism. Although accurate within COSC chronometer standards at -3/+5 seconds per day, Oris interestingly does not submit these movements for certification. The in-house Calibre 400 automatic movement inside the Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 41.5mm series is a major step forward for the brand’s movement-making capabilities, especially for its core offerings. Buyers can choose between a dark anthracite gray tone, an oceanic sunburst blue, or an emerald green, which feels deep and intense in initial images. Also like many previous Aquis models, all three versions of the new Aquis Date Calibre 400 41.5m series use a sunburst dial finish. Outside of this small change and a “5 Days” line of text at 6 o’clock, the dial layout is unchanged, with the familiar rounded sporty alpha handset and indices making a return. Where the smaller diameter of the Sellita movement forced the date display of those models inboard slightly, leading to both a date window and a shortened index at 6 o’clock, the larger date wheel of the Calibre 400 pushes the 6 o’clock window directly in line with the rest of the faceted applied hour indices, eliminating the 6 o’clock index entirely for a cleaner and simpler look. The most notable difference between these dials and the dials of previous Sellita-powered 41.5mm variants is the 6 o’clock date window. Like the cases, the dials of the new Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 41.5mm series keep the overall look familiar while subtly hinting at the new movement within. Around back, Oris includes a sapphire display window to showcase the new in-house movement, but despite this more vulnerable element the case is rated at a hefty 300 meters of water resistance. The ceramic bezel insert features a bright, legible white diving scale on a base of black, navy blue, or deep forest green. As with previous versions, the heavily toothed unidirectional dive bezel is noticeably wider than the case beneath it, leading to a slight overhang which should aid grip. In practice, the shrink-wrapped profile of the mid-case without any outward flaring coupled with the abrupt downward slant and short reach of the lugs tend to make the Aquis series feel substantially more compact on the wrist than more traditional diver styles. The modern and slightly unorthodox Aquis shape with its slab case sides, heavy wide crown guards, and short angular semi-integrated lugs is shared with previous 41.5mm Aquis models, and like those iterations, the unique proportions of the Aquis may make the case measurements somewhat misleading. Rather than reinventing the wheel, the new Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 41.5mm series lets the performance of its new movement speak for itself while maintaining the classic Aquis look.Īs the name suggests, the stainless steel case of the Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 41.5mm line measures in at 41.5mm. ![]() As summer 2021 ramps up and enthusiasts search for a new vacation-ready sports watch, Oris takes the next logical step and brings the Calibre 400 to the smaller 41.5mm Aquis line. As one of the cornerstones of Oris’ lineup the Aquis diver was a natural choice to debut the new movement in late October 2020, but at that time the Calibre 400 was restricted only to full size 43.5mm models. Since its initial debut in fall 2020, Oris’ in-house Calibre 400 automatic movement has been gradually working its way through the brand’s lineup as its new de facto flagship three-hand powerplant. ![]() Thus paving the way to an efficient in silico design Reproduce simultaneously experimental band shapes and transition energies, We show via selected examples how theoretical models can be used to Presenting the most promising accuracy/effort ratio.
